Galvanized Steel Pipe Sizes: Buyer’s Selection Chart

08-15 2026

Galvanized steel pipe sizes should be selected from the service load, connection method, corrosion exposure, and installation length, not from outside diameter alone. This buyer’s chart separates the dimensions a supplier can quote from the engineering checks that still need confirmation before production.

What a pipe size actually includes

For an RFQ, “size” normally means outside diameter (OD), wall thickness, length, and sometimes nominal size or schedule. A galvanized order also needs the zinc protection method, coating target, end preparation, and inspection documents. Two pipes with the same OD can have different internal diameters, weights, bending behavior, and usable flow area when their wall thicknesses differ.

Keep the design calculation separate from the supplier’s dimensional range. Luyuan’s public product information lists steel pipe families including SHS/RHS, API 5CT/5B, API 5L, seamless, and welded pipe. The applicable family depends on whether the pipe carries fluid, supports a structure, or is used as a fabricated component.

Galvanized steel pipe sizes: selection chart

RFQ dimension Published reference range or option What the buyer must confirm
Outside diameter Seamless pipe listing: 10–700 mm; API 5CT/5B listing: 114.3–508 mm Required flow area, joint system, structural load, and available tooling
Wall thickness Not published as one universal galvanized range Pressure, span, buckling, corrosion allowance, and applicable standard
Length 6–12 m for seamless pipe; 6 m or 12 m listed for several pipe families Transport limit, cutting plan, splice count, and installation handling
Steel grade Q235/Q355 for SHS/RHS; API families list J55, K55, N80, N80Q, L80 and P110 Strength, weldability, standard, and end use
End preparation Plain, beveled, or threaded options are listed for the API 5CT/5B product Coupling, welding, flange, or mechanical connection requirement
Surface protection Black coating or 3PE is listed for the API product; galvanized pipe is specified separately Zinc coating target, repair method, topcoat, and exposure category

The table uses the current public product ranges as procurement references. It is not a substitute for a pipe calculation or a promise that every diameter is available in every grade and galvanized finish.

Match OD and wall thickness to the application

Drainage and wastewater

Drainage buyers should start with design flow, slope, allowable head loss, joint details, and access for cleaning. OD alone does not establish capacity. Confirm the internal diameter after accounting for wall thickness and any lining or coating system. In acidic soil or wastewater exposure, specify the zinc protection and any additional barrier required by the project engineer.

Greenhouse structures

Greenhouse frames usually prioritize section strength, connection details, repeated bending, and corrosion exposure rather than fluid capacity. The source library records a Southeast Asia commercial greenhouse using a pre-galvanized steel pipe structural framework in high humidity, with a stated volume above 2,000 tons and an expected structural lifespan above 15 years. That is a disclosed project reference, not a guaranteed lifespan for another site.

Infrastructure and structural supports

For columns, trusses, handrails, and supports, check axial load, bending, unsupported length, connection eccentricity, and local buckling. Q235 and Q355 are listed for SHS/RHS products, but the correct grade and wall thickness must be confirmed against the design code. A larger OD is not automatically stronger if the wall is too light for the unsupported span.

How to prepare a size request

  1. Write the application and duty first: drainage, greenhouse frame, structural support, line pipe, or another defined use.
  2. State OD, wall thickness, length, tolerance, grade, standard, and quantity in one unit system.
  3. Define the connection: plain end, bevel, thread, flange, coupling, or customer fabrication.
  4. Specify galvanized protection, zinc coating target, surface repair rules, and whether a topcoat is required.
  5. Ask for the MTC, dimensional inspection record, coating inspection method, packing list, and coil or bundle traceability.
  6. Approve a sample or first-bundle inspection when the pipe will be roll-formed, welded, threaded, or installed in a corrosive site.

Common size-selection mistakes

  • Choosing by OD only. Wall thickness changes internal diameter, mass, stiffness, and pressure capacity.
  • Mixing nominal size and measured OD. Put the standard and the actual dimensional convention on the purchase order.
  • Leaving length tolerance open. A nominal 6 m or 12 m length still needs a permitted tolerance and a cutting plan.
  • Using a structural grade for a pressure duty. SHS/RHS grades and API or ASTM pipe specifications serve different design purposes.
  • Assuming galvanizing replaces engineering review. Zinc protects steel from corrosion; it does not correct inadequate wall thickness or an unsuitable connection.

Galvanized pipe versus other protection choices

Compared with an unprotected black pipe, galvanizing adds a zinc barrier and can simplify field protection for many atmospheric applications. It also adds surface thickness, affects threading or welding preparation, and requires attention to repair at cut ends. The right choice depends on exposure, access for maintenance, temperature, chemical contact, and the project specification. For buried, high-temperature, or aggressive chemical service, ask the engineer whether a coating system beyond standard galvanizing is required.

Price and shipment planning

The source library gives a public reference listing of approximately USD 608–623 per metric ton for galvanized steel pipe. These are not fixed quotations. Grade, OD, wall thickness, zinc coating, end preparation, testing, quantity, Incoterms, and destination can change the final price. Products without a verified public listing should be treated as Price on Request.

For international shipment, state bundle weight, bundle dimensions, lifting points, waterproof wrapping, edge protection, marking, and container or break-bulk requirements. Link each bundle to the MTC and packing list so a receiving team can trace dimensions and coating records without opening every bundle.

FAQ

What galvanized steel pipe diameter does Luyuan publish?

The public product library lists 10–700 mm for the seamless pipe family and 114.3–508 mm for the API 5CT/5B listing. Availability by grade, wall thickness, and galvanized finish must be confirmed for the project.

Is wall thickness included in a pipe size chart?

It should be, but there is no single wall thickness that fits every application. The buyer should provide the design duty or required schedule and let the supplier confirm a compatible dimensional combination.

Can galvanized pipe be threaded?

Threading can be specified when the selected grade, wall thickness, diameter, and connection standard support it. Confirm thread form, length, zinc repair, and inspection requirements before production.

Which documents should accompany the order?

Request the agreed Mill Test Certificate, dimensional inspection, coating or galvanizing record, packing list, bundle marks, and any third-party inspection report written into the contract.

Next step: Send Luyuan Steel the application, OD, wall thickness, length, grade, coating requirement, quantity, and destination port for a specification-based quotation.
