Steel H Beam Prices: What Determines the Quote?

By Luyuan Steel Technical Team | Updated September 21, 2026

Steel H beam prices are driven by section weight, grade, order tonnage, mill route, surface treatment, processing, testing and delivery terms. Luyuan’s published reference range is approximately USD 440-568/MT, but buyers should compare the complete landed specification because a lower base price can exclude cutting, coating or inspection.

Information basis: The range in this article is an indicative public listing reference, not a fixed quotation. Market timing, dimensions, grade, quantity, processing, Incoterms and destination must be confirmed for each order.

Section designation, theoretical weight and ordered length are the starting points for an H beam quote.

H beam price reference and quote variables

Price input What the buyer must state How it changes the quote
Reference material range Luyuan public listing reference: approximately USD 440-568 per metric ton Provides a screening range only; it is not a project offer
Section Exact H, HE, UC, W or other designation plus dimensional table Controls theoretical kg/m, rolling availability and purchase weight
Grade and standard Grade, governing standard and required edition Changes raw-material route, mechanical requirements and documentation
Length Stock or cut length, quantity by length and tolerance Affects yield, cutting time, remnants, packing and transport
Surface Black, shot-blasted, primed, painted or galvanized Adds preparation, coating material, inspection and curing time
Processing Cutting, drilling, coping, welding or marking Adds shop hours, drawings, setup and dimensional checks
Inspection MTC, dimensional report, NDT or third-party witness Adds testing, coordination and possible hold time
Commercial terms Order tonnage, packing, Incoterm, port and delivery date Determines mill allocation, freight, handling and financing exposure

The published H-beam reference in Luyuan’s source library lists Q345 and lengths from 1,000 to 12,000 mm. These parameters identify part of the available product scope; they do not establish the price of an unspecified section.

Weight per metre is the central calculation

H beams are usually purchased by mass even when drawings count pieces. The quotation should therefore show the section designation, theoretical kg/m, ordered length, piece count and total theoretical weight. If actual-weight settlement is proposed, the contract needs an agreed weighing and tolerance method.

Use this procurement calculation:

Total theoretical mass (kg) = kg/m x ordered length (m) x number of pieces.

Material value = total mass (MT) x quoted price per MT.

This calculation is only valid when the kg/m value comes from the governing section standard or an approved mill table. Do not derive a tender value from the nominal beam depth alone.

Why the same depth can produce different prices

Two beams with a similar nominal depth may have different flange widths, web thicknesses, flange thicknesses and root radii. Their kg/m values can differ materially. A quote written only as “200 mm H beam” leaves the supplier to interpret the section and prevents a fair comparison.

Compared with a light section, a heavier section normally increases material value per metre even if the per-ton price is similar. It may also reduce fabrication or erection risk when selected by the engineer. The trade-off is additional dead load, transport weight and purchase cost; section selection belongs to the structural design, not to the purchasing team alone.

Published related-product reference: W24X9 and W18X11

Luyuan’s source library records a customized US-standard structural-steel reference using the designations W24X9 and W18X11 with a rust-resistant surface coating. Those designations should be copied exactly into an RFQ only after the buyer confirms the engineer’s schedule and the applicable standard table.

The source does not publish the complete dimensional table, theoretical weight schedule, grade or current unit price for those two items. They therefore require a project quotation. This boundary matters: a familiar-looking W designation is not proof that the requested section, grade and coating are interchangeable with a metric H-beam designation.

Custom cutting and processing for structural steel H beams
Processing scope should be priced from approved drawings rather than a general per-ton allowance.

Processing can change the lowest bid

A mill-length beam and a fabricated member are different commercial items. Cutting, drilling, coping, cambering, welding, blast cleaning, priming and marking introduce setup, labor and inspection requirements. Short runs with many unique drawings can cost more per ton than a larger order of repeated members.

  1. Issue a material schedule with section, grade, standard, length and quantity.
  2. Separate supply-only lines from processed-member lines.
  3. Attach controlled drawings and identify the revision used for pricing.
  4. State dimensional inspection, weld inspection and coating acceptance criteria.
  5. Ask the supplier to list exclusions instead of accepting a single undivided total.

Standards and documentation affect comparability

ASTM International publishes ASTM A6/A6M-24 for general requirements covering rolled structural steel shapes and related products. Buyers using ASTM sections should confirm the contract edition and pair the dimensional standard with the specified material grade. EN or GB orders require their own applicable section and material standards; one family should not be silently substituted for another.

Request an English Mill Test Certificate tied to heat numbers and bundle markings. Luyuan’s published quality references also state batch traceability, chemical and mechanical testing, surface inspection and acceptance of buyer-appointed or third-party inspection. These controls need a defined scope in the purchase order before they can be priced.

Freight and order structure

Long members consume vessel or container space differently from compact steel products. The supplier needs the final length mix, bundle plan, destination, Incoterm and required delivery window. Cutting a 12 m member into shorter lengths may simplify transport, but it can create extra joints, fabrication work and waste elsewhere in the project.

A larger tonnage can improve mill scheduling or freight allocation, yet it can also increase storage and cash exposure. Ask for price validity, production lead time, shipment window and the treatment of partial deliveries.

Quote comparison begins with identical section, grade, length, processing and delivery assumptions.

Five checks before accepting an H beam quote

  1. Match every line to the engineer’s section and grade schedule.
  2. Recalculate total theoretical mass from approved kg/m values.
  3. Confirm whether the price is ex-works, FOB, CFR, CIF or another Incoterm.
  4. List processing, coating, testing, packing and inspection inclusions.
  5. Verify delivery dates against drawing approval and inspection hold points.

A common mistake is comparing one supplier’s bare mill-length price with another supplier’s cut, coated and delivered price. Normalize the scope first. The lowest visible USD/MT figure may not produce the lowest landed member cost.

FAQ

Q: What is Luyuan’s published H beam price range?

A: The source library records an indicative reference of approximately USD 440-568/MT. It is not a fixed quotation; section, grade, tonnage, processing, inspection and delivery terms must be confirmed.

Q: Can I request a quote using only beam height?

A: No. Provide the exact section designation or full dimensions, theoretical weight, grade, standard, length and quantity. Similar depths can have different mass and structural properties.

Q: Are cut lengths more expensive?

A: They can be. Price depends on cut quantity, setup, tolerances, remnant handling, marking and inspection. A repeated cut schedule is usually easier to price than many unique members.

Q: Does the per-ton quote include freight?

A: Only when the Incoterm and destination say so. Ask for a line-item breakdown covering material, processing, coating, testing, packing, inland handling and international freight.
