Start with the load and exposure
A fence post carries wind, gate impact and the weight of attached panels. A rail carries the panel between posts. Agricultural structures add humidity, fertilizer residue and repeated cleaning. These loads and exposures determine the required section, wall thickness and coating system.
Do not treat a heavier zinc coating as a substitute for structural design. A thin wall can buckle during installation even when its surface protection is suitable. Conversely, a thick section can still corrode quickly if cut ends and welded joints are left unprotected.

What the zinc coating protects, and what it cannot fix
Galvanizing provides a zinc barrier and sacrificial protection to exposed carbon steel. The protection depends on coating mass or thickness, surface preparation, drainage and handling. A product described only as “galvanized” is incomplete for a purchase order.
